Heavy Equipment Operator

Job Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Foreman or designate, the Operator performs a variety of tasks related to the operation of heavy construction and maintenance of way equipment in the construction and maintenance of track.
Job Responsibilities: 

  1. Operates heavy construction equipment to move, load or unload materials.
  2. Operates equipment in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with regulations, policies and procedures.
  3. Performs daily equipment safety, maintenance checks and routine repairs.
  4. Completes daily equipment log book entries.
  5. Repairs and maintains equipment, making emergency adjustments as necessary.
  6. Coordinates machine actions with other activities, positioning or moving loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members.
  7. Locates underground services, such as pipes, wires, prior to beginning work.
  8. Takes actions to avoid potential hazards and obstructions, such as utility lines other equipment, other workers, and falling objects.
  9. Keeps records of material and equipment usage and problems encountered.
  10. Assists crews by performing labour duties as required.

Travel maybe required throughout BC, Alberta and S.K
Job Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 graduation or equivalent.
  • Minimum one year experience operating heavy equipment in a construction environment.
  • Valid Class 1 Driver’s License and a clean driver’s license.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions; read and interpret document such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, construction specifications, and procedure manuals.
  • Knowledge of and ability to adhere to safety requirements and procedures.
  • Canadian Railway Operating Rules qualifications preferred.

  • Class 3 license w/Air
  • Crane experience
  • Ability to work at heights (on Bridges)
  • Travel required (Alta/Sask usually)
  • Work in all weather conditions
  • Ability to pass pre-employment background checks including drug and alcohol screening
Physical/Travel/Attendance Requirements
  • Works outdoors at construction sites; exposed to harsh weather conditions, loud noise and live track.
  • Performs physical activities that require considerable use of the arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as standing, climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, sitting, bending and handling of materials, equipment and tools.
  • Good hearing, vision and hand/eye coordination is required.
  • Use hands and fingers to grasp, manipulate, and/or assemble objects and tools.
  • Lifts, pushes, pulls, and carries heavy objects, machinery and tools up to 50 pounds.
  • Must wear appropriate safety equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, safety vest and hearing protection, as required by the company.
  • Ability to work away from home for extended periods of time.
