Job Responsibilities:
JOB SUMMARY: Working safely in a team environment the Trackman will comply with all regulatory and company safety and operational policies and procedures while performing a variety of tasks related to railway track construction or maintenance to meet project requirements and industry practices and regulations. Requirements include 1 to 2 years' experience constructing or maintaining railway systems, having worked on tie changes, constructing track, maintain or repairing track, cutting and drilling rail, gauging rail, constructing turnouts, distressing rail, rail changes and other related activities. Reporting directly to the Foreman, the Trackman is a critical member of the construction crew to ensure that the daily tasks are performed safety & constructed in compliance with the project requirements and industry practices and regulations. Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties 1. Build, lay out, replace and/or repair turnouts & their components. 3. Replacement of all rail components including but not limited to ties, rail, joint bars, insulated joints, compromise bars, plates, spikes, ballast, timber road crossings. 4. Perform a variety of tasks related to rail distressing. 5. Operate a rail bender safely and proficiently. 6. Observe conditions of track, track beds, and track right of way to detect and report problems or defects. 7. Primary driver for crew vehicles and is responsible for the care and daily maintenance of the unit & transport of the crew.
Job Qualifications:
Required Skills and Qualifications • Completion of grade twelve (12) or equivalent. • A minimum of 1 to 2 years previous experience in railway construction and/or maintenance environments. • Must have a valid Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR) and Track Inspection Guideline (TIG) certifications - will provide training if certifications have expired. • Must have a valid class five (5) driver’s license or appropriate license as required for the unit, • Understand the purpose & use of all rail equipment and a sound knowledge base on the use of all rail specific hand power tools. • Must be computer literate & have the ability to do time & equipment entry. • Must be physically fit, in good condition and have excellent vision, hearing and eye/hand coordination to perform the duties of the job. • Ability to pass background checks including pre-employment drug testing. • Ability to understand and follow safety rules, policies, procedures and regulations. • Can read construction drawings and specifications. • Effective communication skills and the ability to work as a team to jointly carry out assigned tasks.
Physical/Travel/Attendance Requirements
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions • Works outdoors at construction sites and may be exposed to harsh weather conditions including very hot and very cold weather. • Performs physical activities that require considerable use of the arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as standing, climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, bending and handling of materials, equipment and tools. • Uses hands and fingers to grasp, manipulate, and/or assemble objects and tools. • Lifts, pushes, pulls, and carries heavy objects, machinery and tools up to fifty (50) pounds. • Exposed to loud noise. • Walking for several miles each day on un-even surfaces. • Significant travel away from home is required, rotating shifts, overtime, weekends and some night work. • May be exposed to live track/trains and high voltage. • Must wear appropriate safety equipment, such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection, as required by the company. • Working with hazardous materials including, but not limited to various petroleum products and will have regular exposure to dusty conditions.
