Job Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Manager of Engineering & Technical Services or delegate, the S&C Technical Specialist will provide technical testing and design expertise and support to the S&C Division at all levels, to safeguard the integrity of the signal plant by ensuring policies, standards, regulations and safe work practices are understood and implemented.  The S&C Technical Specialist will also provide coaching and competency follow-up to ensure that awareness, knowledge and practice of safe signaling methodologies are embedded in the workplace culture.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Provide technical expertise and support to Operations and Project Managers in determining solutions to complex Signal & Communication design issues.
  2. Develop signaling and related system test documentation in accordance with contract and industry best practices.
  3. Review testing and commissioning plans written by other members of the team for accuracy.
  4. Conduct signaling test activities including FAT system & subsystem, SAT, staged commissioning, and cutover commission tests.
  5. Participate in project meetings as PNR’s technical representative, if required.
  6. Interact with multi-disciplinary teams on proposals and projects.
  7. Ensure that all safety policies are enforced; conducts regular site inspections/audits.


Job Qualifications:
  • 5 + years of mainline railway signal engineering experience within design / build or signalling maintenance environments
  • Strong understanding of railway signalling principles and legislated requirements for the testing of signal systems;
  • Strong understanding of crossing warning systems and Transport Canada’s RTD-10 and AREMA requirements.
  • Proven knowledge of North American railway operating rules;
  • An understanding of the use of electronic devices and software in vital signalling systems and the requirements for the testing & commissioning of such systems;
  • Knowledge of all railway disciplines e.g.trackconstruction & civil engineering etc. insofar as they affect signal system installation & testing;
  • Proficiency in testing controls & principles;
  • Ability to effectively manage and develop junior staff;
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Better than average understanding and practical knowledge of commonly used software e.g. Microsoft Office suite;
  • Excellent language skills in written and spoken English
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to obtain Professional Engineer status in Canada would be an asset
Physical/Travel/Attendance Requirements
  • Mostly works indoors and occasionally works outdoors at construction sites.
  • Stands, walks, climbs, balances, stoops, and crouches while negotiating work areas under construction.
  • May be exposed to live track/trains and loud noise.
  • May be exposed to harsh weather conditions including very hot and very cold weather.
